About Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA)

Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) was established 35 years ago n Surat, Gujarat. It was only due to the combined support of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), the former Indian Dairy Corporation and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) that led to the establishment of IRMA.

IRMA over the years has provided management training, support and research facilities to students committed to rural development drawing, in the process, co-operatives, non- government organisations, government development agencies, international development, and funding agencies towards it.

The efforts of Dr Kurien and the dairy co operatives are the reasons for the establishment of IRMA. It was founded with the belief that the key to effective rural development lies in professional management. Professionalising rural management involves synergising specific yet unmet needs of the rural sector with the formal techniques and skills of management professionals. It needs the efforts and thought process of ‘rural managers’ to link the two. IRMA offers a two year diploma (PRM) programme in rural management to help in developing the students into such rural managers.

Established in 1979, IRMA today is one of the most prominent names in professionalising the development of India’s rural sector. It has been committed itself to provide management training, research facilities and support to programmes such as rural development drawing in the process, co-operatives, non-government organisations, government development agencies, international development organisations, and funding agencies towards it.
