Initially, it was to be named Prince Charles University but after a lot of discussions, it was decided that it will be named after their new province which was Delhi after shifting from Calcutta. The University has also witnessed Indian independence on its silver jubilee, so due to the partition of India there was no celebration or convocation was held, instead the year succeeding to it i.e. 1948 convocation was organized and the event was graced by then Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, along with Lord Mountbatten, Lady Mountbatten, Abul Kalam Azad, S.S.
