University of Madras

Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of southern India. Established in 1857, by an Act of Legislative Council of India, the University of Madras is one of the oldest universities in the southern region of India. The University jurisdiction has been mostly confined to three districts of Tamil Nadu that include the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. There are several institutions affiliated to Madras University which offer programmes in PhD in a variety of fields. The university has been accredited by the NAAC with a five star rating as well as an A grade and has been declared by the UGC as one of the centres for "potential excellence. There are about 68 university departments which are divided under 17 schools. Each school specialises in different disciplines and promotes research and development for students in those fields.
