Private University Estd. 1952 NIRF #1 (Medical) 2024The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur also known as BESU, is located at Shibpur in Howrah. One of the oldest, premier and leading engineering colleges in India, it is quite popular in India and abroad for its heritage as well as excellence in teaching and research in engineering and applied sciences. The University is recognized as one of the elite and leading engineering educational universities in India.Presently the University provides education in several undergraduate courses leading to B.E / B.Arch Degree. A regular bachelors' degree course extends over 8 Semesters, except for Architecture in it is extended over 10 semesters. The university also conducts several Masters level courses in technical disciplines. PhD programs are also offered. All courses offered by the university have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The university also offers one year post-graduate diploma in Bio-Informatics. Master of Business Administration (MBA) is also conducted in the university. This 149 year old Institution, the second oldest of its kind in India and a paradise of a place, with Deodar & Palm fringed roads,crystal clear Pools and emerald green playgrounds invites a journey into its sanctum sanctorum . Life goes on like an ever flowing stream,meeting on its way that which occurs.Yet as time advances,they have to adapt themselves to suit the surroundings. Established in 24th November 1856 occupying three rooms in Writers' Building to meet the requirement of trained Engineering personnel for Public Works Department as Civil Engineering College ,was affiliated to the Calcutta University in May 1857. From 1865 to 1879 the College functioned as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College. In 1880 the college shifted to it's new and permanent home the lush campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. It got its name, Bengal Engineering College in 1921.

Placement
Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) handles the placement activities and practical training for the engineering students of BESU College. College has an outstanding placement records for its engineering students. The department of the college believes in holistic development for, which college works hard on developing student’s personality, communication skills, career planning and career mapping. College invites top firms in its campus for the campus recruitment. The placement process generally starts in BESU in the month of August / September and continues till January/ February of the next year.
Infrastructures
The campus of the college is a paradise on earth encircled by the Deodar & Palm fringed roads. BESU lush green campus is extended in an area of 49 hectares on the western bank of the river Hooghly. The well constructed edifice of the college provides accommodation for staff and students, campus necessary amenities and services are the main components of the BESU campus.
Classroom
College provides trendy & classy classrooms which are fully air conditioned and packed with modern facilities like black boards, OHP, LCD, podium, tables and chairs. The classrooms facilities make academics’ conducive for students.
Laboratory
There is a DEC Alpha server and a Workstation with 20 nodes and a number of stand alone Pentium PCs. These machines are primarily meant for R&D activities. There is a network consisting of an IBM Netfinity server, with IBM switches and hubs to which 40 number of PCs are connected as nodes.
Library
BESU library is one of the oldest and the largest resourceful technical library in the entire south East Asia. At present college has capacious collection of books is about 1.3 lakhs and 40,000 bound volumes of journals, besides it has a huge collection of non-book materials, such as patents, standards, technical reports and pamphlets. BESU Library is a member of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology (INDEST) consortium and INFLIBNET Digital Library Consorti
