Banaras Hindu University (BHU) if formerly known as Central Hindu college. it's a public central university in Varansi. it was established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya who is a outstanding lawyer and an Indian independence activist, Malviya considered education as the primary means for achieving a national awakening. BHU includes all castes, creeds, religions and genders, and is on the list of Institutes of National Importance.

BHU is organised into four institutes and sixteen schools and more than 132 departments. Total student enrolment at the university exceeds 30000, and includes students from over thirty four nations.

Several of its colleges, including engineering (IIT-BHU), management (FMS-BHU), science, linguistics, journalism & mass communication humanities, law, agriculture (IAS-BHU), medication (IMS-BHU) and Institute of environment And sustainable Development (IESD-BHU), are ranked among the best in Asian country and world. The university is well known for hosting an IIT. The university's engineering institute was designated an IIT in June 2012.
