Why Delhi University (DU) remains the biggest ‘brand’ in the country!

Despite all the controversies and apprehensions surrounding the four-year undergraduate programme, Delhi University continues to be the dream destination for a maximum number of would-be college-goers in the country.

Deepak Pental, former vice-chancellor of DU, says DU is the biggest name in the country when it comes to liberal education. He says that students give more importance to brand names, adding that aspirants from North East or Bihar prefer to study in DU rather than in a local university or college.

According to Pental, the pressure on DU is also because of the fact that the new central universities focussing on postgraduate education are a bad model. The new central universities should start enrolling 2,000 to 3,000 Undergraduate students right away, he says.

Principal of Ahlcon International Ashok Pandey says, "DU carries a lot of awe in the minds of children, particularly in the north. SRCC, Stephens and LSR have become dream destinations and the corporate houses have also given this credence by visiting the campuses for recruitment.”

Senti Longkumer from Nagaland says there are good institutes in the northeast but studying in a DU college creates more opportunities for a student because just being in the capital city makes a lot of difference, reported a leading daily.

Economist and former vice-chairman of JNU B B Bhattacharya says, "DU is a big university with probably the best UG courses taught in the country. DU is better than many state universities and has so far maintained a standard."
