VIT University,commonly known as VIT or Vellore Institute of Technology established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001. The institution offers 18 undergraduate and 34 postgraduate programmes.
Programmes at VIT are accredited by National and International agencies such as NBA, NAAC, IET (UK), Energy Institute (UK).
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering programmes offered at Vellore campus are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering is accredited by Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET III Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202 – 4012, USA.
VIT has been given ‘Most Favoured’ status by companies like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant, etc. In 2011, more than 1.5 lakh students appeared for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE).
There are 9 schools in total at the VIT University. All teaching at VIT is structured around these schools. The students have to be registered in one of these 9 schools:

- School of Bio Sciences & Technology (SBST)
- School of Information Technology & Engineering (SITE)
- School of Electrical Engineering (SELECT)
- School of Social Sciences & Languages (SSL)

- School of Mechanical & Building Sciences (SMBS)
- VIT Business School (VITBS)
