The top B-schools in the US are showering scholarships for Indian students this year. When students like Shreya Mathai and Rashmita Redkar, applied for MBA courses in the USA, they received various offers from top B-schools. Mathai got two offers - $120,000 from Kellogg and $100,000 from Harvard, whereas Redkar received four offers - $120,000 from Kellogg, $100,000 from Harvard, $54,000 from Wharton and $60,000 from Tuck.
Plenty of B-schools from the US are attracting the best of candidates and find many of them in India. Candidates are making equal efforts by leveraging their networks and creating application packages that stand out.
Consultants like WhiteGlow, Admissions Gateway and ReachIvy have reported an excellent growth of 35-40 percent in scholarships offered by colleges to aspirants they feel would maintain their academic credentials.
University of Virginia, MIT, Dartmouth and other school boards have seen a rise in merit-based scholarships awarded to Indian students. Yale University spent close to $5 million of its own funds in the academic year 2015-16 to support Indian students. Indians ranked third, after China and Canada, with 179 students.
Vibha Kagzi from ReachIvy says that many business schools have realised that the annual tuition fee is very high for many students. The cost of living and other expenses only adds to it.
Mansie Dewan, a Delhi-based consultant, says close to 95% of her clients have received some form of aid from top B-schools in the US. There is a rise of almost 40% compared to last year. Consultants say that the quality of Indian students is the reason that the number of scholarships has increased.
