The Civil Services (Mains) Examination 2012 is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

The scope of the syllabus for the optional subject papers for the examination is broadly of the honours degree level i.e. a level higher than the bachelors degree and lower than the masters degree. In the case of Engineering and law, the level corresponds to the bachelor's degree.

Paper I

One of the Indian  languages to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution

Paper II

English

The syllabus consists of two papers, designed to test a first-hand and critical reading of texts prescribed from the following periods in English Literature : Paper I :1600-1900 and Paper II : 1900-1990. Click here for more.

Paper III

Essay

Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

Papers IV & V

General Studies

The nature & standard of questions in the General Studies papers will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. The questions will be such as to test your general awareness of a variety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. Click here for more.

Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX

Any two subjects to be selected from the list of the optional subjects set out below. Each subject will have two papers.
