Social Sciences and Humanities, Environment Studies, Engineering and Business Management… TERI, Ambedkar and Indira Gandhi Technical universities have a wide range of options right from the undergraduate to the doctoral level. Find out more in the second part of our special on options beyond Delhi University.
Ambedkar University Delhi
Aimed at reinventing social sciences with a focus on innovation, AUD introduced a four-year BA honours degree format in 2010. It has three types of honours degrees: three-year BA (hons) with a major in a single discipline; three-year BA (hons) with a major in social sciences and humanities; and a four-year BA (hons) degree with a dual major in two disciplines. There is no separate admission for a dual major programme.
Students admitted to a single major are allowed to apply for a dual major in the final year of their programme. There will be about 1600 seats for all programmes for 2014-15, including master’s and PhD.
“We plan to start two new courses — MA in social entrepreneurship and MA in early childhood care and education. AUD also aims to streamline its admission process. Students can apply online as well as offline. Student volunteers will run the university helplines guiding parents and students coming to the campus. The volunteers will get an opportunity to hone their communication, managerial and people skills,” says Professor Kuriakose Mamkoottam, dean, student services. Programmes on social design and publishing will be included in the second cycle of admissions. The university is planning to expand its infrastructure by developing its permanent campus at Dhirpur in north Delhi and another one in Rohini.
Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW)
Given the status of a university last year it is going strong with its expansion plans. This year, the programmes launched included PhD programmes in computer science and engineering; electronics and communication engineering; mechanical and automation engineering; information technology; applied sciences and interdisciplinary areas like nanotechnology and environmental sciences and computer applications. These will be open to both female and male candidates. IGDTUW also offers BTech degrees in all these disciplines, and MCA and MTech courses exclusively for women. “There are plans to start PG diploma programme in e-governance in collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, BTech in electrical and electronics engineering, BArchitecture and MArch in town planning and urban design and MTech in nanotechnology programmes in future,” says Nupur Prakash, founder vice chancellor of the varsity.
TERI University
The university offers MBA, MSc, MTech and MA programmes. This year, it will be starting a new master’s programme in water science and governance. This will be a multidisciplinary programme leading to an MTech or MSc degree. It will focus on cross-cutting issues of water resources through courses related to the science, engineering, legal, governance, and socio-economic dimensions. The varsity is planning to set up more campuses in cities other than New Delhi. The admissions process has some new features. “While the common entrance test will continue, great stress will be laid on marks obtained in school and at the bachelor’s level, as well as on personal interaction with a committee of faculty, which will be done through an interview either on a face-to-face basis or on Skype,” says Rajiv Seth, registrar.
Delhi Technological University
DTU has introduced a number of new courses with a view to integrate advancements in science and engineering, besides incorporating industry-relevant technologies. At the undergraduate level, the university has introduced engineering physics and mathematics and computing to create a sound science base for budding engineers. The department of electronics and communication has added MTech in robotics and machine design.
