The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has proposed a two-stage examination for students in which they have to qualify the objective test for their descriptive paper to be evaluated. This is being done after JNU adopted a UGC gazette making the entrance examination for research courses as only 'qualifying.'
Milap Punia, the director of Admission, said in a letter sent to chairpersons and deans of various schools and centres that this move will streamline the admission process for PhD and M.Phil courses. Punia also said that if a candidate doesn't qualify in the objective test, their descriptive paper will not be evaluated. This will not only streamline the admissions but also facilitate declaration of results on time. The letter has asked the respective schools and centres to provide their views on the proposal.
The letter also says that the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) and the Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology (CEEB) for the next academic session will be held by the university as per the UGC guidelines issued on May 5, 2022.
The executive council (EC) had recently passed the UGC gazette on eligibility and procedure for admission to M.Phil and PhD courses under which students have to score a minimum of 50% marks. The merit list will be prepared based on the viva voce or the interview.
It was further mentioned in the letter that the number of students’ intake for PhD and M.Phil courses will be recast based on the faculty strength of each School, Centre or Special Centre as per clause 6-5 of the UGC Regulations.
