Medical Council of India (MCI) had provided a notification for a common entrance test for undergraduate medical courses for MBBS degrees on October 21, 2010. The Supreme Court has given a go-ahead on this. The court emphasized that if MCI thought that they were independent and didn't require any approval from the centre, then they could go ahead (after obtaining approval from the Health Ministry) with its implementation and if they thought that they needed approval from the government, then it asked the MCI to go to it. In addition, the court added that that anyone aggrieved by the notification can challenge it in court.
This move however, has faced stiff opposition from the Tamil Nadu government, who have even obtained a stay against the notification from the Madras High Court. The Supreme Court maintained that it will not say anything in the matter and if the apex body regulating medical education in the country thinks that it can implement its notification, then it can go ahead and do so.
