Delhi University may have sold more than a lakh application forms for its regular colleges, but the School of Open Learning (SOL) is not too far behind. Till Monday, over 40,000 application forms had been sold for admissions to the SOL.

The SOL has opened information counters on its campus to cater to curious applicants. Queries are being answered on megaphones, so that others also can have their doubts cleared. Four counters are selling admission forms and prospectus.

Several DU aspirants said they were confused on whether studying at the SOL would get them a degree from the central varsity. HC Pokhriyal, the SOL’s executive director, cleared the confusion and said: “There should be no confusion at all. Students who will enrol at the SOL will receive the degree from DU.”

Many are applying to the SOL because of the uncertainty over getting seats at regular colleges. “I scored 65% in the board exams and am aware that I may not get admission in any course of my choice. There is no other option but to apply for correspondence courses,” said Abhishek Gill from Mayur Vihar. Preeti Gupta, another applicant, said the SOL was the best option for those who opted to work immediately after school.

The SOL, unlike DU colleges, has not introduced the four-year undergraduate programme, and will continue to provide three-year courses. This has led to confusion among those seeking admissions. “Why are students of DU and that of the SOL being treated differently? If DU has made changes to its programmes, they should be applicable to the SOL as well,” said Aarti Sharma, an applicant from Janak Puri.

Pokhriyal said that because the SOL was the varsity’s largest wing, implementation of new coursework was taking time. “I hope that by the next academic year, we can have fouryear courses at the SOL too,” he added.
