SRIJAN, the official formula-style racing team of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra participated in the prestigious Formula SAE Italy, 2013 at Riccardo Paletti Circuit, in Varano De’Melegari, Italy, representing India as one of the only 3 teams from our country with a car at the event site, alongside the likes of IIT Kanpur Motorsports and Pravega Racing of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT).
The team was Jharkhand’s only team in Class 1C event that saw participation from renowned institutes like University of Stuttgart, UAS Esslingen, TU Graz, which are ranked as the best in the business. The team bagged 21st position in the Cost event among the 55 teams participating from different countries all over the globe., and was the 2nd best team from India in the Design event, ahead of IIT Kanpur, after VIT.
For the 2013 season, the team took a bold step by deciding to return to International events by taking part in the Formula SAE Italy in September 2013. This was a crucial step towards taking the team to a new competitive stature.11 members of the 34-strong team visited Italy with their fourth and the latest car, christened as BMR051, powered by a Royal Enfield 499cc EFI single cylinder engine with a modified intake assembly that can deliver a maximum power of 23 bhp, with the car weight pegged at a competitive 280 kilograms.
The main objective of the event is to take students out of the classroom and into the real world, providing them with invaluable practical experience. FSAE and Formula Student events are organised by SAE and Institute of Mechanical Engineers in countries like USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Australia, Hungary, Spain, Japan and China.
While the students almost literally mix their sweat and blood to achieve success in these events, due credit must be given to people who keenly supported Srijan in its sojourn. Apart from esteemed alumni and the college, whose support never wavered through-out the project, organisations like Pensol Lubricants, Central Coalfields Ltd, Servo, SG Enterprises, Jharkhand Small Scale Industries, Eastern Engineering, Raydan, Vasundhara Group, have joined hands as partners and sponsors for the team’s fund raising.
