The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination. This entrance examination is conducted in two stages. Only those who clear the preliminary exam are eligible to sit for the AIPMT final exam. Presently 15% of the total seats in all medical and dental colleges run by the Union of India, state governments, municipal or other local authorities in India, except in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, are reserved for candidates who qualify this examination.
Rahul Radhakrishnan is not sure whether to take the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in 2012. “The only good part about the single test is that we’ll not be required to buy different forms.” Says Tanvi Malik, a Class 12 medical student, “I am not sure how to prepare because there is not enough clarity on NEET. I don’t see its advantages for students. State entrances amplified our chances but a single test would mean restricted opportunities and unbearable pressure on students.”
While many students might not be too convinced with the idea of a single medical test, Ajay Antony, course director - school training programmes, TIME, is positive about it. “It’ll be good that students will be judged on a single platform.”
