Single Entrance Test for College Admissions Across India…

Kapil Sibal is one minister who refuses to be put down. After successful implementation of the reservation policy in the country’s educational institutions, Kapil Sibal has expressed his interest to provide stress-free education admission procedure to students appearing for different entrance exams for different educational institutions.

The dream, in fact has already been put into process as the HRD Ministry has set up a committee to understand the feasibility of such a possibility. The committee has been set up under Science & Technology Secretary, T. Ramaswamy. The immediate job of this committee is to study the current methods and practices implied across universities and institutes for undergraduate admissions.

At present, India’s education system is based on multiples of competitive examinations, which surprisingly, has no parallel in the world! In other countries, the pattern is very simple, where they follow just one test for assessment of scholastic aptitude instead of a plethora of evaluation tests. The committee plans to work around this ideology and hence has suggested the use of a single entrance exam along with due weightage to Class 12 Board examination marks for UG admissions. These recommendations have been put up on the 'National Testing Scheme (NTS)' so that the public can respond to it and a bigger picture can be looked at.

In the wake of unrealistic admission cut-off’s (as high as 100%)demanded by some colleges, the idea of a Single Entrance Test for all exams comes as a breath of fresh air, besides being a fair, just and equally competitive parameter of judging a student’s caliber. This system will also provide students with an equal opportunity to compete for a seat and course of their choice, without falling prey to bureaucracy or the whole system of multiple examinations.
