Shortage of Teachers: 180 posts vacant in VSSUT, 67 in BPUT, 307 in other Engineering Colleges

Teaching in the State Government-run engineering colleges, including the BPUT and the VSSUT, has been severely hit due to lack of teachers and non-teaching staffs. It is so learnt from information furnished by Employment and Technical Education and Training Minister Sanjay Dasburma in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJP MLA Dilip Ray.

The sanctioned five Professor and 15 reader posts and three of the five lecture posts are lying vacant in the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). Similarly, two of the 10 sanctioned administrative posts and 42 of 57 Grade III and IV posts are lying vacant in the university.The Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla is not far behind in vacancies with 23 of 44 Professor posts, 51 of 93 Associate Professor posts and 41 of 171 Assistant Professor posts are lying empty. If vacancies in non-teaching posts are taken into account, a whopping 180 sanctioned posts are lying vacant in this old-age institution.

Similarly, CET at Bhubaneswar, PMEC at Brahmapur, GCE in Kalahandi district, GCE at Keonjhar and ISMIT at Cuttack, which are affiliated to the BPUT, are running severe shortage of teaching and non-teaching staffs. While these institutions have a total of 392 sanctioned posts, including 50 Professor, 97 Associate Professor, 23 Reader and 222 Associate Professor posts, of them 204 posts, including 45 Professor, 80 Associate Professor, three Reader and 76 Associate Professor posts, are lying vacant. Besides a total of 105 non-teaching posts are lying vacant.

In a written reply to another question of Ray, the Minister informed that 430 of 532 sanctioned lecture posts are lying vacant in 32 Government-run colleges and polytechnic institutions. Besides, 103 of 176 sanctioned senior officer posts are lying empty in these institutions.In reaction, Ray said teaching in engineering colleges has been affected due to vacancies and private colleges are taking advantage of the situation.
