Seat Blocking Scam 2014 Rattles Student Expectations

The scam involving the engineering and medical colleges of Karnataka has led to the arrest of about 40 students and 4 agents. This has shattered the dreams of the 1,20,000 students who had appeared for the COMED Karnataka Exam in May 2014.

 

What is COMEDK?

 

COMEDK is an association formed by the Karnataka Private Medical & Dental Colleges, in order to conduct the admissions in an effective, fair and objective manner. It was made responsible for conducting the entrance examination for the academic year 2014- 2015. COMEDK has been in the headlines due its involvement in the seat blocking scam 2014. 

 

What is COMEDK scam?

 

COMEDK is a seat blocking scam that involves the touts and agents sending a selected lot of potential candidates to appear for entrance exams. These students clear the exam thus blocking a seat  which is surrendered back to the college in exchange for money ranging from Rs 1-5 lakh. These are students who often cannot afford to pay fees in a private college and hence offer help to the touts. The choice of fake applicants is made owing to the candidate’s potential and vulnerability. 

These blocked seats are then converted into  management quota seats that are auctioned for a sum ranging from Rs 5 Lakh to one crore per seat. Calculations have indicated that this scam might be worth a 100 crore.

 

When did it start?

 

The timeline of the scam will be given out once a proper scan of the all documents is conducted. 

 

Who all are involved?

 

Investigations have unearthed a direct involvement of about top 10 medical and engineering colleges of Karnataka. A total of 200 fake candidates have been identified as of now. Investigations are still going on to measure the depth of the scandal. All documents, papers and courier company details are being scanned to get to the roots of the scam.

 

 

The hard work and sleepless nights of the candidates has been turned to dust by the revelation of the Seat Blocking Scam. This has caused a huge disappointment amongst the students and their parents. New insights are expected to be revealed once the COMEDK Results 2014 are declared on 4th June, 2014
