Kenneth Pomeranz’s The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy (Princeton University Press, 2000) ranks as one of the most influential books published so far in the 21st century. Pomeranz examines the classic question: How do we account for the rise of the West and the economic divergence between Europe and Asia? Pomeranz’s book challenges Eurocentric explanations of this question which continues to be at the centre of debate among social scientists.
