A rally focussing on women empowerment was organized on November 9, 2013 by Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, in collaboration with Citizen’s Foundation, an ISO certified 9001-2008 certified registered voluntary organisation.
The rally was part of Ilead Ranchi campaign, an initiative by Times of India. The rally started from the Main Building of BIT Mesra, and continued till the campus main gate. The rally resumed from Sidhu Kanu Park, and went on till Soochna Bhawan, opposite IIM Ranchi.
Participants carried placards and posters supporting women empowerment, projecting the necessity for up-liftment of women in our society. Slogans hailing “naari-shakti” were used in plenty. Violence against women was condemned with jingles like "Nari Ka Jo Kare Apmaan Ushko Samjho Pashu Samaan."
The event was graced by the presence of Member of Parliament Mr. Subodh Kant Sahay and Member of Legislative Assembly Mr. C.P. Singh, and the deputy Mayor Sanjiv Vijayvergia. Mr. C P Singh was quoted saying, “A small initiative is all it takes for a great change, and this is that small initiative.” TOI regional heads and other bureaucrats were also present at the venue. The last leg of the event saw cultural performances, which ended with the setting-off of sky-lanterns as a gesture of showing solidarity towards the cause.
