Professor Hanan Samet’s visit to UPES

ACM chapter of University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun is one of the most invigorating student experiences at the campus. With regular technological and educational events involving participation from not only students from the university but other colleges from in and around Dehradun, it added another feather to its cap.

The chapter invited Professor Hanan Samet to christen the Distinguished Speaker Program on February 27-28, 2014.

Speakers’ Profile:

• Professor Hanan Samet holds a doctorate degree from Stanford University

• He is the founding editor-in-chief of the ACM Transactions on Spatial Algorithms and System (TSAS)

• He is an associate editor of Graphical Models, an advisory editor of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing, and on the editorial boards of Geo Informatics and Image Understanding.

• He is the founding chair of the ACM SIG on Spatial Information. He has also served as the co-general chair of the 2007 and 2008 ACM SIGSPATIAL Conference on Geographic Information Systems (ACM GIS).

Professor Hanan Samet delivered lectures on Smartphone Mobile App Mapping API Corral: Apple, Google, and the Competition and Issues in Spatial Databases and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Notwithstanding Dehradun’s infamous weather tantrums with chilly winds and heavy rains, students came to attend his lecture on both days in large numbers. With appropriate and concurrent demonstrations of applications, there wasn’t a moment that one could afford to miss during the lecture.

The second lecture scheduled on February 27 was focused on Issues on Spatial Databases and Geographic Information Systems. He introduced an application developed by him and his team of researchers called NEWSTAND.

The entire event was organized by the ever so hardworking ACM UPES Chapter team. Professor Hanan Samet‘s visit was coordinated and arranged under the guidance of Professor Dr. Manish Prateek(HOD), Professor Anant Bhaskar Garg and Assistant Professor Pankaj Badoni.
