Post Scams, BSEB Scraps Affiliation of 68 Inter-Colleges, 19 Schools

In an effort to refurbish the image of the education system in the state of Bihar after the topper scam unfolded earlier this year, the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) is filtering schools through a series of inspections taking place in over 212 schools in the state.

These 212 schools were granted affiliation during the tenure of Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh, the then chairman of BSEB. Till date, the board has cancelled the affiliation of 68 inter-colleges and 19 schools and the main accused of this whole scam, Lalkeshwar Prasad Jain, has been put behind bars with a charge sheet filed against him.

A district-wise breakup of the number of schools that have lost their affiliation are-

Rohtas (11), Arwal (8), Buxar (6), Nawada (5), Aurangabad (5), Muzaffarpur (4), Gopalganj (4), Saharsa (4), Patna (3), Nalanda (3), Jehanabad (2), Lakhisarai (2), Khagaria (2), Smastipur (2), Banka (2), Bhabua (1), Siwan (1), Bhagalpur (1), Jumui (1) and Purnia (1).

The discontinuation of several schools under the affiliation of BSEB is being done to provide a clear message for zero tolerance toward malpractices taking place in the education system these days.

The board had earlier suspended around 144 schools and also gave last chance several schools for them to explain the reason, as to why should they not cancel their affiliation. Until now, names of 30 people including 20 public servants have also come up under this case.

Background of the Bihar Topper Scam

Earlier this year, a topper scam came to light when two Class 12 board exam toppers, Ruby Rai (Arts Topper) and Saurabh Shrestha (Science Topper), failed to answer some basic questions related to their subjects during a press interview after the release of the Class 12 Board Exam Result.
