Over 1,000 Shortlisted Candidates Say NO to Online Counselling

Over thousand shortlisted candidates have opted out of online counselling.

Out of total 17,464 candidates who were shortlisted this year, nearly 1,200 students have kept themselves away from the counselling.

The last date for submitting the choice of course was 10th June, 2012. For counselling, the candidate had to submit a non-refundable fee of Rs.500.

While refusing to divulge whether those who didn’t opt for counselling had low ranks, Dr GB Reddy, organising chairperson of JEE 2012, said there were several factors — most of them personal.

“Sometimes, a child gives both medical and IIT exam. He will obviously opt for one. Then sometimes a child who gets a low rank in IIT may get a relatively better rank in AIEEE. It is difficult to surmise why a child does not opt for counselling.”

In online counselling, there is no restriction on the number of choices. In fact, a shortlisted candidate can fill as many as 215 courses in a descending order of choice.

The online counselling process, which closed on 10th June, had three stages — registration, submission of photocopies of documents and choice-filling.

If either of these is not met, the candidate loses his counselling chance.

While nearly 1,200 candidates opted out of counselling, there are some who say they lost the chance to get selected due to sheer carelessness — despite achieving an under 2,000 rank.

“I filled only 13 choices and forgot to fill more. I realised it only after the system got locked on June 10. Going by last year’s trend, I am not going to get any of the choices that I filled,” said an upset studnet AS Shekhawat from Rajasthan.

If the candidate does not fill a sufficient number of courses as choices, he/she may not get any course allotment, especially when the candidate has a low rank, Dr Reddy said.

There are as many as 9,647 seats in various IIT's, including 4,722 in the general category.
