Union Grant Commission (UGC) has recently issued a notification making National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) compulsory for aspiring medical students to get an admission in any of the deemed medical universities across India.
As per the notification released on September 15, UGC has announced that admissions to all medical universities, whether state-aided or private, state or central, will be conducted through NEET. This announcement came after Clause 6.3 of UGC Regulation 2022 prescribed a Common Test as deemed by MCI or Medical Council of India for admissions to various medical courses in the country.
This puts an end to the speculations surrounding the modus operandi of NEET. The notification has set NEET as the common test for MBBS and BDS courses which will be conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Moreover, the notification also states that in case of no common counselling by state government or if any deemed university falls out of state government, the institute should put up a transparent system of admission wherein every student is able to apply for the course.
UGC is an apex body that governs all universities in India on the basis of the norms laid under UGC Regulation 2022.
