Engineering is undoubtedly one of the most sought after and high paying jobs in the country and maybe even the world. And why not, after all it is one of the most prestigious, well paying, socially stable, challenging & professional work! At least it is made to be that way in India. It is ingrained in our heads right from our formidable years on why life is a waste if we don’t turn out to be an engineer!

But that’s not wholly true. There is a stack of other careers waiting just for you, if only you looked. And mind you, this is with the same background that is required of Engineering. Giving ourselves the benefit of doubt, I will say that we are so caught up in the halo of engineering that we forget to look elsewhere!

So, if you don’t make it to your choicest engineering college or your choicest engineering course in 2015, don’t be disheartened. And don’t just drop a year to prepare again for next year. At least give other opportunities a try and if you still feel that Engineering is your calling, then by all means, do so.

These courses require Maths + Physics, Chemistry, Biology in some or the other permutation combination, so if you are anyways preparing for your JEE’s, BITSAT’s, VITEEE’s, these are worth a try!

Medicine:

Save the world! Medicine is synonymous with helping and curing. You’d be doing a service to society and earning money at the same time. Like Engineering, there will always be a demand for professionals in the medical field in the capacity of a doctor, nurse or any other associated field. This requires team work; commands respect, ameliorate constantly and have good earnings.

Forensic Science:

Forensic Science is the scientific method of gathering and examining information of an event which is then used in a court of law. In other words, it is a diverse field of specialized professionals who work in criminal investigation and hence work closely with lawyers and law enforcement. Forensic sciences are used to resolve civil disputes, to justly enforce criminal laws and government regulations, and to protect public health.  You could study B.Sc in Forensic Sciences, Diploma in F/Sciences (Ballistics and Finger Prints), B. Sc  in Life Science, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Diploma in Forensic Science (Cyber Crimes), Diploma in Forensic Science  (Computer Forensics) & Diploma in Criminology and Forensic Science for Police Personnel.

Zoology:

The study of animal biology including the structure, embryology, evolution, classification, habits, and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct is covered under Zoology. There are several sub-branches within this field, including Ethology, Zoography, and Anthrozoology. The various courses offered include B.Sc(H) in Zoology, B. Sc in Zoology and Animal Biotechnology, B. Science in Aquaculture (Fishery Microbiology), B. Sc in Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology and B. Sc in Zoology etc.

Biotechnology:

Biotechnology is technology based on biology - biotechnology harnesses cellular and bio-molecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, useless and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes. Specialisations include: B.E. in Biotechnology, B.Tech (Industrial Biotechnology), Diploma in Biotechnology, B.Science in Biotechnology and B. Sc in Biotechnology and Bio Informatics.

Agriculture:

Agricultural Science is a broad multidisciplinary field of biology that encompasses the parts of exact, natural, economic and social sciences that are used in the practice and understanding of agriculture. It deals with the with the proper utilization of land and water resources for the production of crops, livestock, and forest products to meet food and fiber needs, as well as plants for aesthetic use; protection and management of the environment, with its many ecological systems. Agriculture is a science, a business, and a profession that requires many well-educated people to meet the demand for animal and plant specialists, conservationists, food technologists, environmental resource managers, engineers, veterinarians, entomologists, farm and forest managers, and many other agricultural professions. Specialisations include: B.Sc (Agriculture Marketing and Business Management), B. Sc (Bio-Chemistry and Agricultural Chemistry), B. Sc in Crop Physiology, B. Sc in Entomology, B. Sc (Hons) in Agriculture, B. Sc in Agriculture, B.Sc in Agricultural Eco and Farm Management, B. Sc in Agricultural Statistics, B. Sc in Agronomy, B. Sc in Agricultural Meteorology and B. Sc in Agricultural Biotechnology.

Geology:

We all know that Geology is the scientific study of the Earth, including the materials that it is made of, the physical and chemical processes that occur on its surface and in its interior, and the history of the planet and its life forms. Geological Engineering, on the other hand, is the application of geological knowledge to the siting, design, construction, operation and maintenance of civil engineering structures and facilities. Geology offers a huge paradigm of Specialisations like B.Sc (H) Geology, PG Diploma in Geology (Ground Water), PG Diploma in Environmental Geology, PG Diploma in Engineering Geology and B. Sc in Geology.

Besides the above, there are many such education and career options that you students can take up. Textile, Microbiology, Food Technology, Clinical Psychology, Armed forces and Commercial Pilot Training are just some of them. Why should you opt for them you ask? Well for one, there are not too many people who are currently working in these fields. And as the demand for skilled personnel is on the rise, and there is money to be spent, you could just swoop in and benefit from it. Ever heard of ‘first mover advantage’?
