Almost every student who passes class 12th in science stream with PCM subjects has engineering as his/her most preferred career option. Further, all engineering aspirants want to get admission in the best of institutions across India. After IITs, the next top option for them is of National Institutes of Technology or NITs. Many of these premier colleges have been providing top-quality engineering education to students for very long. With NITs now established in almost every state of India, students want to beat the NITs cut-off for top B. Tech branches and get admission in the desired course and institute. If you are also interested in a particular course at a NIT but do not know how to reach your goal, read on.
What Cut-offs Mean for B.Tech Admission
When you appear for the entrance exam towards admission in NITs, you are given a cutoff to qualify for admission. While you may qualify that score cutoff, every institute has its own score or rank cutoffs for each of their B. Tech programmes. The cutoff for each programme will mean that you will need to score equal to or above the given cutoff to seek admission in that specific programme. Further, looking at NITs cut-off for top B.Tech branches will indicate their opening and closing ranks to you. The opening rank means the top rank at which an institute starts offering admissions in a specific course. Its closing rank will mean the rank at which the last candidate will be admitted in a specific course.
About JEE Main and JEE Score/Rank Cutoffs
The examination you need to take in order to clear the NITs cutoff for top B. Tech branches and to get admission in your preferred institute is called JEE or Joint Entrance Examination. Conducted by CBSE, JEE has several participating institutes that admit students on the basis of the scores/ranks they attain in this exam. The JEE Main exam for the current year 2022 is going to be held on April 2, 2022 (offline mode) and April 8 and 9, 2022 (online mode).
If you are going to appear in JEE Main 2022, then let us tell you that the results for paper 1 will be out on April 27, 2022. This is when you will receive your scores, as well as All India Rank, which is calculated based on the overall performance of candidates in JEE Main. If you clear JEE Main cutoff for your category (Gen/SC/ST/OBC/Any other), then you will be eligible to go for admission counselling and can actually get admission by clearing the NITs cutoff for top B. Tech branches. The institutional cutoffs are also set for every category of students.
Top B.Tech Branches at NITs
While there are several engineering branches in which you would like to pursue an undergraduate course at a NIT, following are the topmost domains about which we would further be talking. Before we share the NITs cut-off for top B.Tech branches, here is a listing:
• Mechanical Engineering (ME)
• Chemical Engineering (CHE)
• Civil Engineering (CE)
• Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE)
• Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
• Information Technology (IT)
• Electrical Engineering (EE)
• Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)
• Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE)
• Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME)
JEE Main 2022 and 2022 Cut-offs for Top B.Tech Branches
For students aiming to clear the NITs cut-off for top B.Tech branches, we are going to list these cutoffs for the top 10 branches in the following table. As the JEE Main 2022 results are yet to arrive, the cutoffs for the current year will be announced by NITs after the scores and All India Ranks are declared. However, you should not be disappointed. We will help you get an idea of the likely cutoffs in the year 2022 by providing the General category cutoffs for the year 2022. You may check the closing ranks (CRs) for Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quotas. Please note that not every NIT offers all B.Tech branches.

Factors to Decide B.Tech Cut-offs
Now that you are aware of the NITs cut-off for top B.Tech branches, it is important to know the major factors that decide this cut-off. Check these out here:
- Total number of appearing candidates
- The exam’s difficulty level
- Total number of seats available in each course in every institute
- Previous years’ cut-offs
You must note that from the year 2022, the JEE Main’s All India Rank will not be decided on the basis of your 12th class scores. Thus, your selection to go further for admission counselling in NITs is completely dependent on your performance in the JEE Main exam. Now, it is critical to focus on scoring high marks in paper 1 of JEE Main so you may get admission into a preferred course.
What are Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) Quotas?
For candidates who are unclear on the HS or OS quota described in the table for NITs cut-off for top B.Tech branches, let us inform that it is a specific percentage of seats available in every NIT for those candidates who belong to that category. While there is a separate cutoff for SC, ST, OBC, and other categories, these categories do not determine the state quotas.
By HS quota, it is meant that almost 50 percent of seats in a specific course/institute are reserved for candidates who have done their 12th class from the state (state of eligibility) where that specific NIT is located. Similarly, the rest 50 percent of seats are reserved for candidates from other states, which is called the OS quota. As an exception, NIT Warangal also has an AP quota (with around 60 seats reserved) for students from Andhra Pradesh.
