During a meeting between Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court MB Lokur it was decided that the classes will be held for the time being at the North East Judicial Officers’ Training Institute in the city. The Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court is the president of the governing council of the academy.
Already 800 applications have been received from aspiring students and the initial students intake for the first year will be limited to 60. Twenty-five per cent of the seats will be reserved for students of Assam.
It may be mentioned here that the Assam Government has allotted 21 acres of land in North Guwahati(Amingaon) for setting up the permanent campus of the academy. The process of acquisition of additional 78 acres of land is being started. The institute will be constructed at the total cost of Rs 300 crores. Additional fund for building necessary infrastructure and the running expenses will be borne by Assam government.
The academy is being set up under the National Law School & Judicial Academy Act, 2009. The Director General of the Academy, Dr Gajendra Singh has already assumed office on May 27 last year.
