The Dept. of Commerce of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, organized the National Conference on the theme ‘Mergers and Acquistions-Issues, Opportunities and Challenges’ at Vallabh Bhai Patel Chest Institute Auditorium, University of Delhi, Delhi from 20th-21st January, 2012. Over 500 delegates attended the conference. 49 papers were received from across the countries out of which 37 were accepted and presented. Prof. Dinesh Singh, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, was the Chief Guest and Prof. K. V. Bhanu Murthy, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Business Studies, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi was the guest of honour.

The Conference started with a multimedia presentation on the college and the topic of the seminar, by Uday Sonthalia B.Com (Hons.) 3rd year student and President of Commerce Association. It was followed by an introduction to the theme of the seminar, by Dr. Bindra Prasad, Director, National Conference and Dr. G. K. Kapoor, Principal (Offg.), Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. The Chief Guest, Prof. Dinesh Singh, appreciated the special efforts made by the college. He bestowed upon the conference theme a new dimension by relating the concept of mergers and acquisitions with sociological aspects, with a purpose of gaining more strength, power and size. The Guest of Honour Prof. K. V. Bhanu Murthy very aptly outlined the fertility of the topic by explaining the broad contours of M & A which are still to be researched. Then, Prof. O.M.Aggarwal, Organising Secretary, gave a vote of thanks. Mr. Deepak Kapoor, Chairman, PWC, delivered the Key-Note Address, and presented a paper on “The Deal Continuum- Process, Pitfalls and Precautions.” His paper provided insight into the deal making process of M & A.

Technical Session 1Tax Issues and Merger chaired by Mr. S.C. Agrawal, Sr. Vice President, Global Taxation, Ranbaxy Laboratory ltd. where ten eminent speakers presented their papers.

Technical Session 2: Banking and Regulatory issues was chaired by Mr. Sutanu Sinha, Sr. Director, Acedemics and Professional Development, ICSI. Fourteen papers were presented in this session.

Technical Session 3: Mergers: Implications and Challenges was chaired by Mr. G.R. Bhatia Partner, Luthra & Luthra and Head, Competition Law and Practice. Thirteen papers were presented in this session.

Valedictory Session

The valedictory session started with the gracious presence of Prof. Furquan Qamar, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, as the Chief Guest and Prof. Y.P. Singh, Former Head & Dean, Department of Commerce, University of Delhi, as the Guest of Honour. In his valedictory speech, Prof. Qamar appreciated the successful efforts of the college and the seminar organizing committee and discussed on the various crucial aspects of resource allocation in our education system. He then distributed the certificates to the paper presenters and gave away the best paper awards. Finally, Dr. G. K. Kapoor, Principal (Offg.), Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, proposed the vote of thanks.
