Modi Government Set to Reverse Education Norms Initiated by UPA

The NDA government, led by BJP, is all set to overturn the reforms of the education system initiated in the last five years. The government is planning to introduce a modified aptitude test for class 10 students allowing them to choose their subjects in junior college. NDA has reversed a no-detention policy and wants to make the optional class 10 board exam of CBSE compulsory again.

Dinesh Singh, the former DU vice-chancellor, said that the education system in India lacks a practical policy. He added that they need to set-up a committee of experts, who can devise a policy which is practical, interesting and useful at the same time, without being a burden on the students.

The CBSE introduced the aptitude assessment for class 10 in 2011, the first school board to do so. But since the HRD Ministry wants to bring an altered version of the CBSE tests, the aptitude assessment was not conducted in 2015 and 2022.

To work out the details, a committee comprising of officials from CBSE, NCERT and psychometric experts was set-up. However, the prototype has still not reached a firm decision.

The UPA government had previously decided to make the class 10 board exams optional for schools under CBSE. But seeing the dipping quality in results since students no longer cared for the class 10 exams, the NDA government wants to make the board exams compulsory again.
