The hiccups in hiring foreign teachers and faculty on a contract of five years at IITs and IIMs has finally been removed as the home ministry agrees to allow work visa to the teachers earning a minimum of $15000 a year.
Until now, the work visa was allowed to only those people who earn a minimum of $25000 per year. This was the reason that higher educational institutes in India found it difficult to hire foreign faculty members at the entry level of assistant professors.
Simultaneously, in order to improve global rankings and attract foreign faculty, the IITs are all set to run faculty recruitment drives in various countries across the world. The first drive will be held in USA starting January next year.
V Ramgopal Rao, IIT Delhi Director, mentioned that earlier the IITs conducted similar drives but was limited to Indian-origin candidates. He said it was time they started looking for global talent.
He further mentioned that IIT Delhi plans to increase the intake of PhD students. There will be an increment from 2500 students to 5000 students in the next three years.
