Medical Council of India (MCI) refuses recognition to MBBS colleges in Tamil Nadu

The demand for MBBS seats is forever on the increase, yet in 2013, students are facing a shortage of 700 medical seats in Tamil Nadu. The reason is that Medicla Council of India (MCI) has either refused or withdrawn recognition for about 6 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court-stipulated deadline of July 15 for grant of MCI recognition has gone by and the Madras High Court has not been able to provide any breather either.

Hence the Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu are now in a fix. Unless the Supreme Court relaxes or extends the deadline, even the MCI cannot do anything about it without the apex court's nod. The Tamil Nadu medical colleges in a soup because of this are:

• Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (150 new seats)
• Madha Medical College and Hospital (renewal for 150 students)
• Tagore Medical College and Hospital (renewal for 150 students)
• Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute (recognition for 150 students)
• Sri Devi Karumariamman Educational Trust (admission to new college)
• Asan Dental College and Hospital in Chennai and Mookambiga Dental College and Hospital in Kanyakumari district: refused permission by the Dental Council of India to admit 100 students each during this academic year
• Mahathma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute - has been disallowed from increasing its intake from 150 to 250
• Adhiparasakthi institute and Sathya Sai Medical College: prolonged CBI case; recognition to be renewed

In the event of such uncertainty, we are yet to see what’s in store for these medical colleges and consequently the 700 approximate medical seats in Tamil Nadu. The last date for obtaining MCI recognition is July 15, and the deadline for completing the entire admission process is July 31, he pointed out.
