The Medical Council of India (MCI) has cancelled the admission of as many as 519 MBBS students studying in 17 colleges. The students have been attending classes for the past three months.

The step was taken after MCI said that these colleges had given direct admission to these students, violating a Supreme Court order of September 28, 2022, which said that the state government must hold a centralised counselling and allot colleges to the students on the basis of their performance in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).

A senior official from MCI said that while inspecting the admission procedures, it was found that 17 colleges located in four states have provided direct admission to 519 students and have violated the SC order.

The issue was being investigated and more admission cancellations were expected. This is also the first time that such a large number of students have been asked to leave the MBBS course for not adhering to the admission process.

Maximum violations were found in colleges in Uttar Pradesh, where 481 students were given direct admission in 14 colleges. Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have one college each with a total of 38 students admitted.

The medical colleges defended themselves by saying that the counselling process was very slow and it was impossible to fill up the seats before the admission deadline. Hence the decision was taken to provide direct admission instead of having vacant seats.

The president of Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that MCI should initiate a strict action against these colleges for playing with the careers of so many students and defaming the medical profession. He added that the students are also to be blamed. They are part of the violation and cancelling the admission is the correct decision.
