With the dipping scene of MBA aspirants in Mumbai seems like Management courses are losing their allure. Data stored with the technical board states that only 20,757 students have applied for MBA/MSS courses in the state on the year of 2013, which proves to be less than half of last year’s figures, 42,490. Last year, 32,825 students had actually applied and eventually took admissions. This year though, seems to be not as fruitful as more than half of the state’s 46,000 seats may go empty.
From this year onwards, admissions are based on Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) scores. Apart from this, applicants from this year, also includes students who have appeared for other management entrances, like XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test), ATMA (AIMA Test for Management Admissions), MAT (Management Aptitude Test) and CAT (Common Admission Test) for IIMs (Indian Institute of Management). But even after such steps, the meager number of MBA applicants has not increased this year.
There is a popular perceived notion that market oriented postgraduate diploma course could be the reason for the falling interest among students.
Experts believe the tepid industry is to be blamed for such response during campus placements.
The steep decline in the number of applications has left management institutes in a fix. Dayanand Meshram, joint director of the directorate of technical education, said students might be pursuing the tailor-made PGDM courses that are more industry oriented. "Their syllabus is updated from time to time and admissions are conducted at institute level."
AICTE chairman S S Mantha also cited a general country-wide trend of engineering students preferring masters in core engineering groups to MBA as another reason for the low number of applicants. However, he pointed out that other regions in the country have not seen such a drastic drop in student response.
