List Out Teachers’ Duties: CBSE to Private Schools

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be asking the private schools in the country to provide their staff details in order to make sure teachers in these schools are not burdened up with non-teaching work.

CBSE would release a circular to close to 16000 private schools that are affiliated with it to give the complete details of the work assigned to the non-academic faculty, said a source.

The sources also said that CBSE received multiple complaints from individual teachers as well as private teachers' association, that the schools are cutting down costs by asking teachers to handle bus duties and collect fees among other chores. Non-teaching employees or clerical staff usually does these jobs.  

Sheik Shabbir Ali is the president of the Telangana Private Teachers Forum, one of the associations that took the matter to the board and he said that unlike the government schools, teachers in private schools can't complain due to the fear of losing the job.

He added that in many schools, teachers were expected to keep an eye on the students during breaks and call their parents to inform about the fees and fill up forms.

However, S K Bhattacharya, president of Delhi’s action committee unaided recognised private schools, does not agree with this. He said that teachers are not involved in the administrative work. They are only involved in academic activities as well as co-curricular activities like dance, debate and sports.

Another teacher from a school in Uttar Pradesh said that the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) has added to the workload of the teachers. They have to give remarks for each activity each student does. On top of this, they are asked to do other odd works, which add to their work pressure.

According to CBSE rules, all the private schools should have separate sets of teaching and non-teaching employees.
