Anticipation. Check
Anxiety. Check.
Confusion. Check
Dread. Check
And that sums up my condition moments before the result.
Well, in my case, being a topper throughout school life (no bragging there) came with its own set of disadvantages (read a lot of pressure). Add to the mounting expectations of parents, teachers and peers, the curious queries of first cousins, second cousins, third cousins, friends of friends, et al. So, in a nutshell, anyone who had the slightest idea that I was in grade 12 rang me up on the result day. Yay life!
So as per the instructions of an Agony Aunt, my plan of action was to either switch off my phone or pester the people who called me up to divulge how they fared in their Boards. Sounds like fun, right?
With shaking fingers, I keyed in my roll number, and call me superstitious, but I asked my mom to press the Submit button. A moment later, I couldn’t believe what was reflected in the computer screen! A flurry of 90s was unleashed and a very dazed me was enveloped in hugs by my family. All that I’ve missed out due to the barbaric Boards seemed to vanish when I saw the happiness glowing in their eyes.
There is always that lurking feeling of regret, and the occasional guilt trip, because even a 95.5% doesn’t ensure a seat in the first list.
For all my friends who didn’t do well, I’d like to quote from Invictus, ”I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.”
Don’t lose heart because you alone can alter your destiny.
