Even as the second round of admissions draws to a close in Delhi University (DU), colleges offering journalism have been noticing a surprising trend this year.

Contrary to the initial interest shown by a large number of students in the subject, only a handful have actually turned up and got enrolled for the journalism course.

“It looked like there were a lot of takers for journalism during our preadmission counseling this year. But the cut-offs were extremely high because of which a lot of students who had made the cut in the first merit list have taken admissions in commerce or economics in campus colleges,” said Kanika Khandelwal, media coordinator of Lady Shri Ram College.

However, some colleges that have managed to fill about half the seats for the course said the possibility of a third cut-off list for the subject was slim.
“Students are still doing the rounds of colleges because of which the full strength of crowd has not yet come to journalism. However, we have just 20 seats for the general category in journalism out of which 18 have been filled. So, we cannot promise a third merit list,” said Geetesh Nirban, media coordinator of Kamala Nehru College.

Students, who were caught off guard because of the unusually high cut-off for the course, said they preferred other subjects over journalism.

“I was keen on studying journalism. But the cut-offs were so high that I chose to go in for English Honours from a top college. At least I will have a strong base that way - something I may have compromised on had I taken up journalism,” said Akriti Mehta, who wanted to take up the subject.
