The students who took the CBSE conducted JEE Mains exam on April 7, 2013 were happy. They found the first joint entrance exam for admission to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs) to be easy and predictable.
Areas on aptitude and drawing were simple, with the Maths section a little difficult to crack. According to statistics, approximately 14 lakh students will take the2013 JEE Mains exam and about 9 lakh students took the exam in the pen pencil mode. The online JEEE Mains exam window period beings on April 8 and will continue till April 25, 2013.
For the first time India’s most revered Engineering entrance exam is being held jointly. It is also the first time that the Board exam result will hold such an important place in the admission process. Board exams scores and JEE scores will get will be given 40% and 60% weightage respectively. Only the 1.5 lakh top scorers of JEE Mains (both paper-pencil & online mode) will be eligible to take the JEE (Advanced) 2013 for admission to the various IIT’s in India.

Weightage for subject was 30 marks each - Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
Various coaching institutes claimed that there were discrepancies in the JEE Mains 2013 questions paper. Questions carrying 12 – 20 marks in the JEE Mains paper had errors. ‘There were at least three questions with factual errors in the chemistry section that need to be mentioned. In one of the questions, students had to identify a wrong statement, but none of the statements given were wrong’ said the Managing Director of IITians Pace, Mr. Pravin Tyagi. Students from state boards faced some problems in the Physics section and claimed that they were part of NCERT textbooks.
Even with the glitches, subject matter experts and coaching institutes claimed that 2013 JEE entrance exam was easier than the previous year. A cake walk for most students takers of JEE Mains in the paper-pencil mode, we are yet to see what the online JEE Main exam has in store for the students.
