The JEE (Advanced) entrance examination, which is paper-pencil based, is likely to become a computer-based exam from next year.

The final decision on the change will be taken when the Joint Admission Board (JAB) meets in early September, 2013, reports a leading daily.

IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar said a proposal to offer the test on computer or, at least, to keep it as an option in the first year has been discussed.

He further said the rollout looked possible since the number of candidates who took the test had gone down to 1.5 lakh.

When India took its big step towards the 'one nation, one exam system' this year, a total of 12.82 lakh high-school graduates applied to appear for the JEE (Main) exam.

Among 12.82 lakh candidates, only 1.74 lakh aspirants appeared for the computer-based test.

The next stage, which is the JEE (Advanced) test for admissions to the IITs, received 1.5 lakh candidates.

Meanwhile, it has been decided that JEE 2014 will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur.
