JEE 2017: Will Class 12 Marks Determine a Good Ranking?

According to the HRD Ministry, from the next year onward, class 12 marks will not be a major factor in determining rankings in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admissions to engineering undergraduate courses. Class 12 marks will only be a crucial parameter for determining the eligibility criteria

JEE Advanced 2022 Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for appearing in the exam, candidates should meet at least one of the following criteria for admissions into IITs-

1. Candidates should have scored at least 75 percent marks in class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board (65 percent in case of SC/ST and PwD category).
2. The candidate must be within the category wise top 20 percentile in their respective class 12 or equivalent examination.

From now, the marks scored in the five subjects will be considered for calculating the aggregate marks and cut off marks for fulfilling the top 20-percentile criterion. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, any chosen language, any subject other than the four.

Until now, 31 NITs admitted students based on all-India ranks prepared with 60 percent weightage to a candidate’s JEE performance and 40 percent weightage to his/her class 12 weightage. However, now JEE Main rankings will be based solely on the performance of candidates in the JEE examination 2022 and not on class 12 marks.

The decision of making class 12 only a part to determine the eligibility criteria can backfire as students will not focus on school education and concentrate more on private coaching classes. However, on the other hand, it can also help students concentrate on performing better in JEE 2022 exam and ranks will be based purely on performance.
