Amidst furor over introduction of Delhi University’s Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) by teachers and students alike, we have a segment of students who are not complaining! The international students who come to Delhi University to pursue their education are happy with the introduction of the new module.

Whether it is the US, UK, Laos etc., most of these countries follow the same system of education. Since it synchronizes with the education system back in their respective countries, they say that it helps meet global standards of education and brings DU at par with global varsities.

Delhi University offers 5% reservation to foreign students and despite the changes in its curriculum, there has neither been an increase nor a decrease in the number of applications from foreign students. Veena Mishra, Deputy Dean in the foreign students’ Registry Office maintained that there has been neither an increase nor decrease in the number of applications from foreign students to Delhi University in 2013. The number of applications for the academic year of 2013 to Delhi University stands at 2, 500.

According to the new undergraduate programme of DU, students will now complete their graduation in 4 years instead of 3. Students will now be required to study 11 foundation courses in the first 2 years including students pursuing vocational education, along with the degree courses. DU authorities have also taken special measures for international students in 2013 by introducing a part-time English proficiency course so that students with limited proficiency in the language can feel at ease. This course can be completed in 80 hours by the students. This will act as a boon to students as the lectures in colleges are all delivered in English. Deputy Dean Mishra also maintains that this will help international students from non-English speaking countries like Korea, Tibet and Bhutan.

The introduction of Four Year Undergraduate programme will also help raise the global standards of Delhi University and get it a global ranking.

While the international students are happy, the only thing that’s worrying them is the non-availability of college selection. The students can apply to as many courses, but Delhi University will decide on the college.

Delhi University offers 2 international hostels, one each for men & women. Besides that, there are other options like PG’s, apartments and college hostels, of course!
