Interestingly, this is the first time that University of Delhi (DU) has included such a clause in its admission procedure.

“All applicants who take admission under the foreign students’ quota will be required to have health insurance from their parent country. This has to be produced at the time of admission. The insurance will also have to have an evacuation clause,” said Veena Mishra, deputy dean (foreign students), DU.

An evacuation clause enables a student to claim reimbursement for his/ her evacuation from the country, where he/she is studying, in case he/she has to be sent back to his/her country due to medical reasons.

Most universities across the world make health insurance a mandatory requirement for admitting a foreign student. Tibetan applicants who grew up in India and cannot go back to Tibet, however, have expressed discontent about the new rule.

“I had no idea that a health insurance was required at the time of admission. I tried to find out what exactly is needed but am a little confused as I cannot produce insurance with an evacuation clause,” said an applicant who did not want to be named.

DU authorities, however, have made it clear that Tibetan candidates as well as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI card holders) will have to furnish only health insurance. “A simple insurance without an evacuation clause will be enough for these applicants,” said Mishra.

Delhi University has received applications from over 2,500 foreign nationals this year. The applicants are from 108 countries, with the highest number of applicants being from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Bhutan. Many students also apply from South Asian countries such as Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

All foreign nationals seeking admission in Delhi University will, from this academic year, be required to produce a health insurance, along with other mandatory certificates, in order secure a seat. The rule will apply to both undergraduate and post graduate candidates.
