It was a good day for Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) as its efforts to be counted among the media university became fruitful as the ministry of Information and Broadcasting India give it a go ahead to apply for a deemed university status.
As per an insider in the ministry of Information and Broadcasting, IIMC, which is an autonomous body under the ministry, can now seek permission from the University Grants Commission for change in status. Once the UGC approves the same, IIMC will be able to award degrees than just diplomas.
Any institute with a deemed university status doesn’t need to seek consent from the parliament for its elevation. Currently, IIMC offers only post graduate diploma courses that are not counted as degrees for pursuing careers in academics, research and higher education.
After the approval from the Information and broadcasting minster Venkaiah Naidu, IIMC will be a deemed university with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), National Centre of Excellence in Visual Effects Gaming, Animation and affiliated to it.
Since the university is the expansion mode now and with the deemed university status, it will be able to prepare students for better career options and higher education besides Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising.
