Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, from this academic year 2022, will start admitting non-residential students for the Master's programme. The institute known for its residential campus will now open gates for day scholars. The IIT Council has taken this decision, which is the highest decision-making body of the institutes, to admit day scholars who can study from home or stay in a rented place near the campus.
This move is a part of HRD ministry’s plan to increase the number of seats to 1,00,000 by the year 2020. Currently, IIT Delhi offers 2500 seats, out of which 1000 are students are admitted in Masters Programme. The institute has decided to increase the PhD seats to about 20 percent this year as a part of the goal to increase overall seats.
This year, only a few students opting for Masters Programme will be provided with hostel facility, while rest of them will be day scholars. IIT-Delhi is already renovating old hostels and constructing new ones.
Recently, the government asked all the 23 IITs to revamp their infrastructure and up their faculty strength to admit more students without stressing resources. Without re-developing and re-structuring campuses, it would be impossible to admit more numbers. The old IITs were specifically asked to renovate and restructure themselves and strengthen their infrastructure to avoid any discrepancy.
Coping up with so many changes and demands, the old IITs have asked for more time to enhance their infrastructure and increase their faculty strength. Above all this, the important fact is to not degrade the quality of education that the IITs have been known for while restructuring the infrastructure.
