In a surprising turn of events, a total of 769 students who were shortlisted to study at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have turned down the opportunity. It’s a rare situation considering that getting admission in the IITs is a tough nut to crack.
The reserved category seats going vacant after the first round of allotment, is a common scenario every year. This year, however, even general category seats in various IITs have remained vacant following the first round of allocation, reports a leading daily.
The institutes, therefore, have had to conduct a second round of admissions to fill up all the seats.
One of the reasons behind this trend is aspirants lacking confidence in the new IITs. Moreover, candidates are more concerned about the subjects than the institutes.
JEE (Advanced) chairman H C Gupta said hundreds of seats are vacant for students under all categories.
Gupta added there are seats available in every IIT, but the maximum number of vacant seats is available at ISM-Dhanbad.
