The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has ranked 30th in the world for its civil engineering course according to the QS World University Rankings for technical subjects released on Tuesday. The survey looked at the top 200 universities in the world for five primary technical subjects - computer sciences, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

The QS World University Rankings is a survey of the world’s top 500 universities by Quacquarelli Symonds using a methodology that has been published annually since 2004.

The rankings are based on four key pillars — research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. More than 50 million people have viewed QS World University Rankings in the past 12 months and there has been overwhelming demand for more detailed subject rankings.

While the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US has topped in all subject categories, nine Indian universities have made to the list of which IIT-B is ranked the highest at 30.

“The new QS World University Rankings® by Subject respond to a need for comparative data at a more granular level,” said Ben Sowter, head of QS Intelligence Unit, which produces the rankings. “In many countries, students are being charged more than ever before for their degrees. So assessing the potential career outcomes of one’s study choice is becoming increasingly important. QS rankings are unique in taking on board the views of global employers.”

All the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore have made it to the list. Delhi University and Mumbai have been ranked between 150 and 200 for mechanical engineering.
