An Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) will be established in the north-eastern state of Tripura by next year, apart from its already existing four branches in India at Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Kanchipuram.
These institutions provide technical education at graduate as well as post graduate level.
The cost to set up IIIT Tripura is estimated to be Rs. 128 crore. The new IIIT in the north east is expected to boost the growth of the domestic IT market, according to a source.
The new IIIT will be located in Bodhjungnagar, 25 km north of state capital Agartala. Bodhjungnagar is one of the biggest industrial hubs of the north east region. The new IIT will be operational from the 2014-15 academic year.
50 acres of land has been allotted for the institution by the state government, an official revealed. It is the very first such institution in the north-eastern region of India.
According to an official, a private industrial house from West Bengal and two state-owned companies, ONGC and NEEPCO have proclaimed their interest to partner for the Tripura IIIT, wherein the amount of Rs 119 crore will be incurred from union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the remaining amount will be shared by ONGC, NEEPCO and the private organisation.
