A one day National Conference of Vice Chancellors of Open Universities was organised by Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, by realizing the importance of establishing a Uniform Accreditation System for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Institutions nationwide, on July 4, 2014.
Shri. Ashok Thakur, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India gave his consent to inaugurate the conference. Moreover the conference was graced with the presence of Vice Chancellors and representatives from fourteen Open Universities and five Directors of Directorates of Distance Education Institutes (DEIs).
The Secretary, MHRD encouraged IGNOU to take the lead in developing a framework for accreditation, along with all other ODL stakeholders. Prof. M. Aslam, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU emphasized the role of ODL as a powerful tool for bringing education to disadvantaged segments of the society and increasing their employability. Prof. Sushma Yadava, Pro Vice Chancellor, IGNOU reiterated the importance of accreditation in enhancing the recognition and prestige of ODL institutions. A Committee was constituted to work on the development of the accreditation framework under the leadership of IGNOU.
