IGNOU Courses Launched at Goa Central Jail

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) courses were launched at the New Modern Central Jail at Colvale on Wednesday by the chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

Chief Minister said that imparting education will go a long way in changing criminal behaviour. Colvale Jail has gone an extra mile putting in extra efforts to provide education to inmates by imparting quality education through IGNOU. Elvis Gomes, inspectorate of general prisons, Kameshwary Murthy, regional director of IGNOU and Margaret Fernandes, Jail Superintendent were present on the occasion.

Chief Minister said it is education that makes a man and education creates a healthy society. Education is not just about getting degrees or certificates but it more important as it guides and creates a conductive atmosphere within the society and its well-being

Chief Minister further informed that various other activities are also being planned to provide employment opportunities to all the qualified inmates to help them earn a respectable livelihood and keep them away from crime after their release.

Kameshwari Murthy said that provisions have been made to operationalize every aspect of teaching-learning transaction, including holding of examination for all students within the jail premises she added.

In all 35 inmates have opted admission for various courses in the jail. IGNOU currently has examination centres in jails in Delhi (Tihar), Gujarat, Odisha, and Punjab.
