The Indian telecommunications industry is the world's fastest growing telecommunications industry with 706.37 million telephone (landline and mobile) subscribers and 670.60 million mobile phone connections as of August 2010. It is also the second largest telecommunication network in the world in terms of number of wireless connections after China. These facts and figures are reasons enough for any engineering student to take up telecommunications as his area of specialisation. A telecom engineer fresh from college has positions available in a variety of fields provided that he/she is equipped with the right set of skills and training.

These fields include optical network systems, data network systems, next generation network systems, broadband technologies and wireless network systems. Apart from these there are a number of career opportunities available for qualified personnel, including telecommunications systems test engineering, telecommunications design, telecommunications network engineering, telecommunications network planning, telecommunications network technician and telecommunication executives.

A telecommunication engineer could be employed with mobile phone service providers, cable and satellite networks, broadcasting sector for eg:the Ministry of Communication, radio, television and for railways or police wireless organizations. Telecommunication engineers are also employed    by the paramilitary forces like the BSF, CRPF, and other defense-related organizations. They can also go for postgraduate and doctoral studies if they plan to get in to the field of teaching. Telecommunication engineering graduates are suitable for employment in the field as Design, Development, Production, Quality   Assurance, Sales, Servicing and Software Engineers. Companies which use public & private telecom systems and private companies that manufacture electronic, digital and radio equipment are always on the lookout for qualifies telecom engineers.

Eligibility Criteria


Minimum qualification is a 10+2 (or its equivalent) in the science stream with subjects English, Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. Most of the states or institutions have their own entrance exam for admission; some colleges on the other hand are known to grant admission based on the 12th standard score. There are also national and state level common entrance examinations like AIEEE whose results are accepted by most of the institutions across the country.
