Prof. Venkatraman, visiting faculty at, IIM Bangalore, IIM Indore, and IIM Kolkata took the last day of SIP Workshop on March 28, 2014 at Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore. He had taken the workshop on Industry Analysis.
Firstly he talked about what is Industry Analysis. Some students gave the answer that it is the overall environment in which an industry operates and are key drivers in the industry. He said that Industry analysis consists of two important aspect- Data part and Dynamics of an Industry.
Then he asked that as a PGDM student what is the important of industry analysis, students answered that it is required for sustainable growth of the firm and for exploring opportunities in the market.
He added that SIP will help in getting a PPO as companies observe your performance during SIP. He asked the students to jot down the parameters of Industry Analysis. Then he provided the industry analysis checklist.
In that check list he talked about various things like difference between consolidated and fragmented Industry, key drivers, segmental analysis, dynamics of the industry, critical success factors, recent events, strategic decision etc.
Then he took the FMCG Industry for its analysis as it is very vast and discussed various things like category analysis, company analysis, impact of organized retail sector and overall industry trend. He discussed about soap, hair care and soft drinks category in FMCG.
He provided many examples to make student understand the aspects.
Finally he talked about E- commerce, what is online retailing and segment of online is retailing. He also talked about opportunities in E- commerce. Lastly he discussed about online advertising, its types, online classifieds and online travel.
The session was full of immense learning, student get to know how to do an industry analysis.
